A health expert in Teso sub region, Eastern Uganda, has cautioned girls aged below 20 years against getting pregnant due to the risks involved.

A medical expert Dr. Charles Okadi says a lady should conceive past the age of 20 years when her pelvic bones have enlarged and she is ready to accommodate a baby.

“Girls who become pregnant while young risk dying during labor pain due to obstructed labor caused by immature pelvic bones”, Dr. Okadi says.

Dr. Okadi who doubles as the District health Officer (DHO) Soroti says the risk of dying is even higher among young expectant mothers who do not attend antenatal care.

He says in order to deliver, such young expectant mothers usually have to undergo operations to remove the baby, which is usually risky to both lives of the mother and the baby.

He adds that others who survive can get complications such as urine leaking from the bladder.
