The United States Government has pledged 25 million US dollars to support the prevention of mother to child transmission program in Uganda.

The funds were announced by USA ambassador Jerry Lanier during the Fifth National Paediatric HIV/AIDS Conference (28 to 30 September, 2011) in Kampala.

Ambassador Lainier says the funds will go towards acceleration of the plan to eliminate mother to child transmission of HIV by the year 2015.

He said that the funds will complement the current efforts of Ministry of Health to increase access to the health care.

A senior lecturer at the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Dr. Sabrina Kitaka, says 90 percent of paediatric HIV cases are transmitted from mothers.

She appealed to all expectant women to go for HIV testing to protect their unborn child from contracting the virus.
