Thirty members of Village Health Team (VHTs) from the eastern Ugandan district of Soroti have received skills on how to prevention the transmission of HIV from mother to child.

The one day meeting, which took place on Friday (30 September 2011), was organized by Soroti district in partnership with President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PREPFAR).

Martin Amodoi, Soroti District Health Educator, says the meeting was aimed at addressing existing gap in the referral of HIV positive expectant mothers to health centers by VHTs.

He adds that VHTs reporting skills are also expected to be boosted in order to capture the right statistics and improve on maternal health.

Amodoi says these efforts are meant to ensure HIV positive expectant mothers give birth to healthy babies, free of HIV.
