A branch of non government organization Reproductive Health Uganda has registered a significant reduction in HIV prevalence amongst expectant mothers who seek health services at their health center in Nakaloke.
Kyalimpa Annet, the coordinator of the project run by RHU’s Elgon zone, said in the last five months, since the project was implemented in Mbale, out of the 300 expectant mother who delivered at the health center only ten where found to be HIV positive.
Kyalimpa added that the project aimed at improving the sexual, reproductive, maternal and new born health of vulnerable people, with a special emphasis on the health needs of women, youth and children. It also aimed to reduce infant mortality, maternal mortality and the control of spread of HIV by deploying pregnant monitors within the community to identify other expectant mother and educate them on the dangers associated with having multiple sex.
Before the implementation of this of project, HIV prevalence amongst expectant mothers was high in the area, according to Silver Ochieno Nakaloke, RHU branch manager. He added that the health center is committed to delivering 100 percent, HIV free mother in the coming years.
