Medical specialists have disclosed that the ‘level of ignorance’ about maternal and child health in Uganda calls for both political and religious intervention.
Yesterday (12 October 2011), during a two-day training workshop for health workers on maternal health in Kabarole, Western Uganda, experts urged the government to cooperate with both religious and local leaders to educate its citizens on how to seek health services.
Medics described how that the quality of healthcare an expectant woman accesses has a significant impact on the results of her pregnancy. Many pregnant women die at the hands of unskilled traditional birth attendants while others die on their way to health centers; others die at hospitals because of unskilled health personnel.
Health specialists also said the state is failing to fulfil its role of employing skilled workers at the health centers.
The workshop is being held at the Leiseux Hotel in Fort Portal, Western Uganda.
