Fighting spirit: Catherine Williams

Last week (6 January 2011) we laid to rest Ms Catherine Williams. Many would remember Catherine at the helm of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s oldest support agencies for persons living with HIV and AIDS, Community Action Resource (CARe).

To many, CARe was a safe space to talk about the daily challenges of being HIV positive. It was one of the earliest advocacy organisations assisting persons who were grappling with their newly diagnosed status. Others know Catherine for her fighting spirit when very few people were fighting for the rights of people living with HIV.

Catherine leaves behind her legacy of not giving up despite her various health challenges. Catherine has left us her fight for anti-retrovirals for people living with HIV and an organization that will grow from strength to strength.

I have been involved in the field of HIV for the past 12 years. I have worked in several different organisations that deal with the topic in different capacities.

The one that gives me the most joy is sharing my knowledge of the virus in the form of trainings.
