A man from Luwero, Uganda has won a competition run by electronics giant Philips for designing information stands that will raise awareness about crucial health issues while keeping commuters cool.

Luwero resident and Key Correspondent Kityo James won first prize in Philips’ Liveable Cities Award this month (January 2012) for designing shade stands filled with health messages, which will be placed at busy commuter points to raise awareness about breastfeeding, cervical cancer and domestic violence.

The shades stands, which will offer vital sun protection for people on the go, will be filled with educational resources targeted at the elderly, the vulnerable and mothers with babies.

Mr James said: “The major inspiration for this project was the need to reach those who do not have and cannot express their needs for betterment of their lives, especially women and breast feeding children.”

He described the project as the “ultimate opportunity to address this deprivation and promote education through a community intervention”, adding that he hopes the shades will be extended to other parts of the country due to their environmentally friendly nature.

The first stands are to be built in carparks and on main roads proposed by town authorities in Wobulenzi and Katikamu towns in Luwero District.
