School children in Amuria District, Uganda are to enjoy better health after an American Christian group announced it has commissioned a SHS 750m sanitation project in the area.

The money, donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will pay for 50 sanitation projects in the area, doubling Amuria’s entire sanitation budget for the financial year.

The project includes the commissioning of 15 self contained ‘VIP latrines’ targeted at attracting the girls to stay in school during their monthly periods. It will also provide 15 water tanks stationed in various schools plus 20 new and rehabilitated boreholes in various villages.

The church’s Uganda Country Director Elder Karl Beckle and Sister Robin Beckle announced the commissioning at a meeting attended by the Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness and Relief Musa Ecweru.

“We are very grateful that the money which we sent here has been put to good use. We love the people of Uganda, most especially children, and that is why we have left our own children back home in America in order to come and serve the people here,” Elder Karl Beckle said.

Ecweru said the boreholes, water tanks and VIP latrines will go a long way to improve on the lives of both the children and the people of Amuria District.

Otim Moses Omuron, Ecweru’s political assistant, revealed that each of the ten newly drilled boreholes will cost SHS 10m while ten rehabilitated boreholes will cost SHS 9m each. The 15 self-contained ‘VIP pit latrines’ each cost SHS 20m while each of the 10,000 litre water tanks cost SHS 9m.

The launch was also attended by the Chairman LC5 Amuria Francis Oluma and the Deputy CAO of Amuria Richard Alioka.

The self contained VIP latrines for girls were constructed in the following primary and secondary schools: Aten PS, Olianai PS, Olekai PS, Obur PS, Abota PS, Asamuk SS, St Michael SS, Olianai PS, Opam PS, Ajaki-Asinge PS, Willa PS, Ongutoi PS, Arute PS, Asamuk PS and Kuju SS.

New boreholes were drilled in Ongutoi health centre, Wera Town Board, Kegere village, Oburu Olomunai village, Angaro village, Agule Health Centre II, Okutoi village, Ageregere Moru village and Abota primary school.
