Soroti district in Teso, eastern Uganda has unveiled plans to commemorate World AIDS Day 2012 on Saturday (December 1).

The district’s main celebrations are to be held at Kamuda Sub County. Martin Amodoi, the district focal person for HIV/AIDS, says Kamuda has been selected because of its alarming HIV prevalence rate.

Part of the activities to mark the day will be safe male circumcision to be conducted at Kamuda Health Center III, cervical cancer screening and candle lighting in memory of all those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses and to symbolise the increasing number of new infections.

This years’ event will be marked under the theme Re-engaging the leadership for effective HIV prevention. According to Amodoi, emphasis for this years’ event has been placed on the leadership role in the HIV and AIDS response in Teso region.
