Placenta rots inside mother’s womb

Just within the city suburbs where health services are expected to be better, many individuals are living in misery.

An expectant mother, Juliet Kyomuhirwe, aged 30 who lives in Kiwatule (a city suburb) developed complications at one month of pregnancy and went to Kiwatule medical centre where she was given four injections and antibiotics at a fee of 50,000 Ugandan Shillings. She was told she would be fine.

A few weeks later, Juliet noticed no change in her condition so she went to Mulago hospital were she had a scan. The doctors noticed that the placenta was poorly placed and advised her she should avoid heavy work and get some treatment.

She recalled that a doctor had suggested that patients go to Kibuli or Nsambya hospital because he had too many patients to attend to at Mulago. Patients returned home because they were not sure if they would be the lucky ones attended to. This problem is acute and is currently happening in the National Referral Hospital (Mulago).

Referral hospitals give free medicines but the attention to patients is poor and usually doctors attend to emergencies but neglect the other patients there. Juliet herself saw one expectant mother who was seated right amonst those being attended to who screamed for help but was ignored, the baby was born right there and that’s when doctors realised it was serious. However, it was too late because the baby died a few minutes later.

Juliet started bleeding again at two months pregnant. Unfortunately, she had a miscarriage, the foetus was incomplete with a missing leg and hand and the placenta remained in the womb. She went back to the medical centre for inquiries but the nurse told her it was quite normal and so she relaxed.

By 10th/08/2011, she had severe pain, was smelling and realised her abdomen was swollen. She went back to Mulago hospital and they realised that the placenta, the other parts of the body and blood were rotting inside her womb.Treatment was given and she started bleeding immediately.

The smell was so bad that the majority of thedoctors ran away from her butfortunately one midwife attended to her and helped her out.

I am one simple Ugandan lady - an economist by training but so much concerned about health in Uganda.
